Siden 1751 har navnet Ferreira altid været synonymt med portugisisk vin af høj kvalitet. Markedets historie er sammenflettet med historien om udviklingen af Douro-regionen (afgrænset i 1756) og dens Porto- og bordvine (Douro DOC).
Dona Antonia, der var begavet med en usædvanlig energi og et sjældent kommercielt talent, gav et stort skub til vinproduktionen i Douro og var kendt for sine sociale foranstaltninger i regionen.
