The Dão Delimited Area is located in Beira Alta, in central Portugal, sheltered from the winds that blow from the Serras do Caramulo, Montemuro, Buçaco and Estrela.

The vineyards are located between 400 and 700 meters above sea level, on slate plateaus and shallow granitic soils where the pine forests produce full-bodied wines with a high capacity for bottle aging.

The climate of continental influence of the Dão presents extremes, with cold and rainy winters and hot and dry summers. Initially, the vineyard was developed by the clergy, especially by the Cistercian monks. In 1908 it became the second Portuguese demarcated region. With the entry of Portugal into the EC in 1986, the vineyards underwent a restructuring, with new winemaking technology and choice of suitable grape varieties.

Dão has a wide variety of varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Tinta Roriz, and Encruzado, Bical, Cerceal and Malvasia Fina in white.
