Franciscus was a Dutch merchant. Born in 1813, in the town of Hilversum, he is the person we must thank for the Niepoort seal in the Port wine trade, after he decided to move to Portugal and start a company in his name. He owned neither land nor vineyards, but his know-how as a Port wine salesman allowed Niepoort to secure a first solid foothold in Porto. He married Francisca Louisa Elisabeth Ehlers and died in Porto on 7 March 1887.
