Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal was founded in 1926 by Abel Pereira da Fonseca to manage the properties he owned in the Bombarral region.

He planted the first extreme vineyards (only wine – no fruit trees mixed in) lined up and wired, which was a great innovation at a time when there were still no tractors. The vineyards were also divided into plots, with each plot planted with a single variety (another innovation at the time). He introduced new varieties and to study their adaptability he planted a plot in Quinta do Sanguinhal where he had more than 30 different varieties and which is still called “experiences”.
