The Comenda Grande was established by Maria José de Almeida Margiochi, granddaughter of José Maria Eugénio de Almeida (today the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida) and daughter of Gertrudes de Almeida Margiochi and Francisco Simões Margiochi. This 750 ha farm, a benchmark in the region, Inherited by D. Maria Madalena de Noronha and her husband D. João de Noronha, and after by Maria de Lourdes S.A. de Noronha Lopes and husband Eng. António Lopes is been keeping up with the conversion of farming in Alentejo, investing considerable sums in the process. Along with the retrieval of some of the barren land with irrigation, the wooded areas (mostly cork oak - Quercus suber ) have been revitalised, and 30 ha of vines have been planted at the edges of the property, as well as a modern olive grove, also about 30 ha.
The option of growing vines has basically been a resumption of one of the estate's former activities, helping to make the most of the space in the ancestral monte, made available with the reduction of the land used for cereals, for which conditions are perfect. About 25 ha of the vines are red grape varietals and 5 ha white, and more of the most popular Alentejo varietals have been planted: Trincadeira and Aragonez (red), and Arinto and Antão Vaz (white). A smaller number of other vines has been planted, regarded as being likely to constitute an added value in terms of differentiation, and these are: Alfrocheiro, Tinta Caiada, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, in the reds and Verdelho in the whites.
