Quinta do Poço do Lobo 1987 Red Wine

Poço do Lobo Tinto 1987 is a historic red wine from the Bairrada region of Portugal, produced by Caves São João. This vintage represents an old harvest that showcases the remarkable aging potential of Bairrada's red wines, particularly those from Quinta do Poço do Lobo, a property acquired by Caves São João in 1971. It is typically a blend of traditional Bairrada grape varieties such as Baga, Castelão, and sometimes Moreto, grown in clay-limestone soils under Atlantic climate influence. The winemaking followed traditional methods of the era, aiming for a robust wine with structure for long aging, and its prolonged bottle aging in the cellar has allowed it to develop unique tertiary complexity.

When tasting the Poço do Lobo Tinto 1987, expect the characteristics of a mature and evolved red wine: a clear garnet color gradually fading to mahogany. The aroma is very complex, with notes of red and black berries, dried fruits, earthy undertones, mushroom, resins, and spices (peppery, coffee, smoke), along with subtle floral and secondary notes. On the palate, it offers a soft attack, medium structure, and present but smooth, good-quality tannins. The acidity is well-integrated, sometimes with a sweet/sour duality. The finish is long, dry, and persistent. This wine, despite its age, remains alive and vibrant, with good acidity and a gastronomic profile, making it ideal for roasted or grilled red meats, game, and aged cheeses.
