In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded Burmester & Nash in London, dedicated to the grain trade. Later, in 1750, already in Vila Nova de Gaia, started the export of port wine to Europe and the British Isles. The family name comes from the small town of Moelln, in northern Germany, the Mayor deriving title, which means city leader.
In the late eighteenth century, the company is dissolved and Henry Burmester son is with his two sons Frederick and Edward, a new company of Port, H. Burmester & Sons.
